He is a Singer-songwriter musician
His father bought him his first acoustic guitar when he was eleven
He began performing as a teenager in the late 1950s, playing a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands
His first hit came as a member of a band called Them when, in 1964, he wrote and recorded Gloria, which was the B-side of the single Baby, Please Don’t Go
By 1967, he was a solo artist working for Bang Records executive Bert Berns when he released his hit Brown Eyed Girl, which he said he was never paid for – he calls it ‘The Money Song’ – because ””they got all the money and I got none. “. The song spent a total of sixteen weeks on the chart
He released Moondance in 1970. It was his first album to sell one million records.
His fans are known as “Vanatics.”
He left school in 1960 with no qualifications and after several short apprenticeship positions, he settled into a job as a window cleaner
He has worked with many legends, including John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Bobby Womack, and BB King, along with The Chieftains, Gregory Porter, Michael Bublé, Joss Stone, Natalie Cole and Mark Knopfler
He has received two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
He has sold 44 Studio albums, 7 Live albums, 9 Compilation albums and 80 Singles
His hits include:”Bright Side of the Road”, “Have I Told You Lately”, “Precious Time” and “Hey Mr. DJ”
